* How Can This Help a Cancer Patient? (Updated: 3/20/20) Medicine's still in the early years of cancer immunotherapy treatment. So don't assume that your oncologist will know or, knowing, even recommend such. Rather, you can ask your doctor if he knows whether targeted antibody (immunotherapy) treatment and open trials are available for your particular cancer. (And, if you're wealthy, for various reasons, request a full genome sequence of your cancer!) First though, you may want to listen to today's program and carefully read this article!

* Lung Cancer Too: Incredible results should not give false hope to all sufferers, but cautious hope to many. A British media report on a late-stage lung cancer "cure" using antibody treatment (immunotherapy) virtually cured a bedridden hospice patient with advanced lung cancer that has metastasized to his lymph nodes. His oncologist gave this 50-year-old two weeks to live (though such estimates can be notoriously wrong). But two weeks after his antibody treatment with the drug called Opdivo, a drug already available in the U.S., he recovered and returned home, even though previously, his lung cancer already had spread to his vocal cords and lymph nodes. * Jan 2020 Update: Three papers published together in the journal Nature have added to our targeted antibody arsenal new powerful weapons called B-cells and the in-tumor factories that make them. RSR hopes that with so many major breakthroughs, by 2022, immunotherapy will move to the top of the treatment ladder.

* Feb 2019 Update: Here are two from among the BEL listeners who've had a positive experience asking their oncologists about targeted antibodies. First, Brad H. from Vancouver, BC (kgov.com/brad-2015) called off-air on 2/14/19. His father, who's bladder was removed as its cancer spead to his lymph nodes, had two rounds of chemo with no apparent benefit. Brad thanks BEL for suggesting that patients urge their oncologist to explore immunotherapy. For now, a year after being accepted into a trial, Brad's father appears to be cancer free! Then, RSR listener Tom Healey, 83, passed away after asking for and then receiving an immunotherapy treatment that, while it didn't overcome his deteriorated heath, did enable his own marrow to again produce red blood cells!

* April 2019 Update: More than 1 in 4 go into full remission in small lymphoma immunotherapy trial, now going into larger clinical trial including for breast and head-and-neck cancers. (And see below; this article has been updated throughout 2019!)

* June 2018 Update: Florida woman cured of advanced breast cancer. See the BBC's report on the U.S. National Cancer Institute's amazing success with Judy Perkins, given three months to live and now recovered and still thriving [as of 2019] three years after her cure from the most common form of breast cancer!

* Oct 2018 Update: Two cancer immunotherapy researchers win the 2018 Nobel Prize in Medicine!

* Targeted Antibodies Cancer Treatment Revolution: Among the stunning results for targeted antibodies cancer treatment, CBS News reported on 35 terminally-ill advanced-stage leukemia sufferers. The disease went into remission in 94%, or 33 of 35 patients. Dr. Michael Grossbard, New York University's Perlmutter Cancer Center leukemia specialist told CBS News, "Oncologists are reluctant to use the word extraordinary. But these [results] are extraordinary. These are really remarkable findings..."

* FDA Approval: The FDA has approved Novartis' Kymriah to treat children with acute leukemia. Because various methods of cancer immunotherapy exist, the media and even the FDA itself will claim one or another of these early immunotherapy drugs (see below for those already approved in the U.S.) as a "first". Methods include checkpoint inhibitors and the actual modification of antibodies. See below for more. But first, there's this, right up the street from RSR's studio...

* ArcherDX in Boulder, Colorado: ArcherDX spearheaded the effort to extend the life of 12-year old Zaida. Real Science Radio host Bob Enyart interviews ArcherDX CEO Jason Myers to discuss Zaida's case and to get a better understanding both of this revolution in cancer treatment and of how targeted immunotherapy works. Studies in the U.S. and the U.K. are seeing hundreds of patients with many types of cancer virtually "cured", as some oncologists are now putting it. Not every patient though responds well, and some few have even died from the treatment. Update: Sadly, Zaida herself passed away on March 10, 2017 and while RSR would like to learn the specific cause, of course the family's privacy desires comes first. Overall though, the widespread success is stunning. Now, a growing number of oncologists will be offering their patients the greatest of hope through individualized treatment that, like an archer aiming at a target, just might hit the bullseye. * Cancers Already Being Successfully Treated: People suffer from more than 100 major types of cancer. And while antibody treatment has resulted in some relatively rare autoimmune or other negative and even lethal side effects, the more common positive treatment experiences range in degree, from significantly extending life expectancy, stopping further tumor growth, and actually shrinking tumors, to major remission, and even to apparent cure. The types of cancer already being successfully treated with immunotherapy, using either the inhibitor or the re-targeting approach, include:
- Lung cancer (non-small cell with 30-50% response rates as of Feb. 2017)
- Childhood leukemia / leukemia
- Hodgkin lymphoma
- Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
- Lymph node cancer
- Melanoma skin cancer (Updates: 2018; 2019)
- Forms of breast cancer (including some success with TNBC)

- Head cancers
- Neck cancers

* Targeted Antibodies Trials, Success Stories, News, and RSR Broadcasts: The public awareness of the current revolution in cancer antibody treatment should explode in the 2020s. As with all medicines, patients respond with great variability. However, the following results and ongoing trials are greatly encouraging:
- 2019: Progression-free breast cancer survival improves in a Phase III trial for more than a quarter of the women using antibody drug Margetuximab.
- 2019: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the most common type of lung cancer, now in first-ever human trials for a vaccine-type treatment.
- 2019: Late-stage prostate cancer patients in recombinant virus vaccine trial.
- 2019: AI software discovers patterns in lung cancer CT scans that indicate whether a patient is likely or not to benefit from immunotherapy (which is still expensive enough to deplete within a year the life savings of nearly half of patients on it).

* Why Is There A Crack that Circles the Earth? Today's Real Science Radio program is the seventh in our continuing series, RSR's List of Answers to Hydroplate Theory Objections. Mechanical engineer Bryan Nickel talks with Bob Enyart about Michael Oard's objection to the global manner in which Walt Brown’s flood model presents the failure of the Earth's crust. Mr. Oard's critique of Dr. Brown's theory appears on creation.com, the (fabulous) website run by CMI, Creation Ministries International. If pressure in a subterranean chamber (the great deep) built up, Michael questions why the crust would "burst in a linear fashion" as explained by the HPT, and "not through one or several openings... as one would expect." Nickel explains the answer to Michael's objection using super slow-motion YouTube videos, and based on the laws of physics, and as found in Walt's book, In the Beginning. Also, Bryan clarifies Oard's statement, making it clear that the HPT does not claim that the fountains burst forth "through the MOR [mid-oceanic ridge]" but that before the flood, there was no MOR! Rather, the globe-encircling mid-oceanic ridge is a scar left over from the fountains and roughly traces the crack.

* Super Slow Motion Video Illustrates Linear Failure: As explained by mechanical engineer Bryan Nickel, because of factors including
- elastic strain
- a form of potential energy known as strain energy
- kinetic energy
- stress concentration
materials commonly fail in a linear fashion, as illustrated by these super slow motion videos...

* Where did the Pacific's Continental Crust Go? For this sixth program in our continuing series, RSR's List of Answers to Hydroplate Theory Objections (see rsr.org/answers), Bob Enyart again interviews Kevin Lea, HPT expert and graduate of the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power Program, to discuss the "Missing Pacific Crust" objection to Dr. Walt Brown's Hydroplate Theory. In 2012 renowned geophysicist and creationist John Baumgardner objected to the HPT's "claim that a layer of buoyant granitic crust currently lies beneath the Pacific basin. ...continental crust is readily distinguished from mantle rock by modern seismic techniques." Dr. Baumgardner added that there was an "unmistakable absence of any thick layer of granitic crust in the Pacific basin." However, Lea and Enyart share the discoveries beneath the Pacific and Indian Oceans of many researchers, as published in the scientific literature, documenting the extensive "presence of continental-type crust in the oceans where oceanic crust might be expected [which] has been recognized from seismic information by a number of authors." (For more information, see rsr.org/albright and rsr.org/hpt.

* 2017 Show Update: More Sunken Continental Crust! Remember, all scientists work for Walt Brown. In this case, the Geological Society of America published in their peer-reviewed journal GSA Today that a 4.9 million square kilometer of "the southwest Pacific Ocean is made up of continental crust." 94% of that continental mass, dubbed Zealandia, is submerged. (See GSA's Flip PDF.)

As Walt Brown describes it, "Because the Pacific crust would not have dropped as 'one huge block' (as early geologists thought), its thousands of fragments, buried under and within the magma that rose to the surface, will be difficult to detect seismically. However, the largest block, greater in area than India, is now recognized as a 94% submerged continent called, Zealandia."

In Feb. 2020 the journal Geology reported Continental-scale geographic change across Zealandia during Paleogene subduction initiation. (Actually, that shouldn't say subduction, but subsidence. And the discovery of dinosaur blood proved scientifically that the geologic column does not represent millions of years but that a single recent global flood produced its sediments, strata, and fossils. So the million-year timeframes are invalid in the otherwise important Zealandia research.) About this, Christopher Carbone at Fox News reported in 'Lost continent' of Zealandia transformed by formation of the Pacific’s Ring of Fire:

The 'lost continent' of Zealandia, which is submerged beneath the Pacific Ocean, experienced a major upheaval...

...scientists now believe that the topographic transformation may have been related to a reactivation of ancient fault lines linked to the formation of the western Pacific's Ring of Fire.

Their timeframes are all wrong, so there were no "ancient" fractures to reactivate.

Scientists have long believed that Zealandia's crust began to thin...

Long? Remember, all scientists work for Walt Brown! And Zealandia was discovered and named only in 1995.

"These dramatic changes in northern Zealandia, an area about the size of India, coincided with buckling of rock layers (known as strata) and the formation of underwater volcanoes throughout the western Pacific," study co-authors Rupert Sutherland, a geophysicist at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington, and Gerald Dickens, of Rice University in Texas, wrote in The Conversation.

“One of the amazing things about our observations is that they reveal the early signs of the Ring of Fire were almost simultaneous throughout the western Pacific,” Sutherland said in a Geological Society of America press statement.

Sutherland and his colleagues have put forth a new mechanism: a so-called "subduction rupture event", which they compare to a massive, super-slow earthquake.

Actually, during the flood's continental drift phase (which is after its rupture and flood phases and before it's recovery phase) is when Zealandia began to sink. See the HPT's Sequence of Events at rsr.org/sequence.

“We don’t know where or why,” said Sutherland, “but something happened that locally induced movement, and when the fault started to slip, like in an earthquake the motion rapidly spread sideways onto adjacent parts of the fault system and then around the western Pacific.”

* Fifth Program in Our Continuing Series: For this fifth program in our continuing series, RSR's List of Answers to Hydroplate Theory Objections (see rsr.org/answers), Bob Enyart interviews Kevin Lea, formerly with the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard’s nuclear engineering department. Enyart and Lea discuss the "Geometry Problem", an out-dated but lingering criticism of Dr. Walt Brown's work. For estimating the pre-flood thickness of our planet's crust, decades ago Dr. Brown used the amount of material in the Earth's sedimentary layers to arrive at a starting estimate of 10 kilometers thick. Afterward, when evidence dictated that even more debris had been ejected by the fountains of the great deep, Brown increased the estimate to 10 miles. Finally, in the last few years, with far more "flood debris" located, the theory's estimate for the thickness of the crust as initially created now stands at 60 miles!

Geophysicist John Baumgardner's quarter-century-old criticism that a 10-mile thick crust cannot account for today's known thickness, a valid objection at the time, is no longer relevant. In 2012 Dr. Baumgardner wrote regarding the HPT's need "to increase crustal thickness of the continents by the factor of two... there is the geometry problem of not having enough crustal mass between the present continent and the adjacent ridge to achieve such a doubling of thickness..." Concluding today's Real Science Radio broadcast, Enyart and Lea discuss the evidence that required increasing the estimated thickness of the created crust! * TNO's Bunch Up. Here's Why: From Walt Brown's Origin of Asteroids, Meteoroids,and Trans-Neptunian Objects, a TNO authority, Christopher Crockett, points out:

All the objects beyond 150 astronomical units come closest to the sun, a point known as perihelion, at nearly the same time that they cross the plane of the solar system. There’s no reason for these perihelia to bunch up like that. Billions of years of evolution should have left the perihelia scattered, like the rest of the Kuiper Belt—unless something was holding the perihelia in place.

All 2,300 TNOs whose orbits are known (taken as a group) have ω (argument of perihelion) values that cluster near either 0° or 180°. Chance could produce such a departure from a random distribution only once out of 10,000 times!

Anyone interested can duplicate these results provided by astronautics Professor R. B. Brown. He downloaded from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Small-Body Database the orbital elements for all 2,300 TNOs with known orbits. He then constructed a histogram for w that showed two prominent peaks—one near ω=0° and one near ω=180°. A simple chi-square test showed that the distribution was non-uniform with a confidence level of 99.99%. Professor Brown concluded that “many TNOs recently received powerful thrusts from near the plane of the ecliptic. Thrusts directed up above the ecliptic, produced ω values near 0°; thrusts directed downward produced ω values near 180°. He projected many TNOs and asteroids back in time and showed that Neptune’s gravity could have provided that thrust for only a few of these bodies over the last 22,000 years. Therefore, other planets near the ecliptic plane were involved. Were these TNOs even closer to the Sun than Neptune?

If that thrust occurred millions of years ago, random perturbations would have smoothed out those peaks, so the values for w would have been spread out uniformly between 0° and 360°. Therefore, “recently” must be less than millions of years ago—perhaps 5,000 years ago.
