- Herod Rebuilt the Temple 20 B.C., John 2:18-20 46 years to build this temple, sometimes called “Herod’s temple,” built on the place of the old foundations of Zerubbabel’s Temple, so that the Jews typically refer to the three temples, of Solomon, Zerubbabel, and Herod, as only two Temples, viewing Herod’s as simply a major-refurbishing of Zerubbabel’s construction. (Rome destroyed this last Temple in A.D. 70. And more than 500 years later, Islam’s third holiest site (after Mecca and Medina) is the Dome of the Rock (600s), built on the Temple Mount.
