Practice Bible Verses

* Bob Enyart and Doug McBurney: discuss the big news of the day! It's NOT Homeland Security comparing pro-lifers and veterans to terrorists, and it's NOT Doug comparing Bob to Bill Clinton! It's... tonight's seminar in downtown Denver at the historic Brown Palace!

* Practice Bible Verses to Interpret:

John 17:4: [prior to being crucified Jesus said] "I have finished the work which You have given Me to do."
[Explain why the Lord said this before going to the cross, for at John 19:30 He said, "It is finished!"]

1 Cor 7:12: I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her. [Explain why Paul distinguishes between his command and the Lord's (7:10).]

Gen. 9:22, 24-25 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father... So Noah... said:
"Cursed be Canaan..." [Explain why Noah cursed Ham's son Canaan for the sin of his father Ham.]

John 5:31 Jesus said, "If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true [credible]." [Explain why not.]

Col. 1:20: and by Him [Jesus] to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. [Explain the seeming universal reconciliation.]

Regarding Sodom: Gen. 18:20-21: And the LORD said, "...I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know."
In the Garden: Gen. 3:9 God said, "Where are you?" [Explain why God seems to not know these things.]

Mat. 19:17: So [Jesus] said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments." [Explain "no one" comment; and "keep the commandments."]

Isa. 14:9: "Hell from beneath is excited about you, To meet you at your coming; It stirs up the dead for you, All the chief ones of the earth." [Explain hell being excited. How can a place have emotion, or take action?]

Ps. 139 You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb... When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. [Explain being made in the lowest parts of the earth.]

Gen. 3:15: And I will put enmity between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel." [Explain two seeds, and why enmity now and not before?]

Luke 16:18: "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery..." [Explain why this verse seems to contradict other passages like Mat. 19:9, 1 Cor. 7:26-27 that seem to permit divorce for fornication.]

* Hierarchy of 16 Hermeneutics: a hermeneutic is a tool for understanding the Bible. Proper hermeneutics are invaluable. Bob Enyart's seminar in Denver's famous Brown Palace hotel prioritizes this list of hermeneutics:

God: existence, eternity, and entity (i.e., the Godhead)
His Story: the plot, or storyline, of the Bible (grasping the Bible's overview is the key to its details)
His Nature: living, personal, relational, good, and loving (includes J.O.N.A.H. & N.O.A.H.)
Christological: Christ-centered, the text is His Word (the work of the righteous, and hatred of the wicked)
[Here, the third hermeneutic, His Nature, now takes precedence over, and swaps places with, His Story]
Context prioritized: God's Nature; His Story; the dispensation; the book; chapter; paragraph; sentence
Literalness: Scripture presents a literal message, and contains figures of speech, symbols, parables, and poetry
Historical/Grammatical: method emphasizes original languages, cultural and historical setting
Covenantal vs. Dispensational Principle: Paul instructs students to "rightly divide the Word" 2 Tim 2:15
Prophetic: Speaking God's Word; also, predictive prophecy; and non-prophecy (predictive only in hindsight)
Sufficiency Principle: Scripture presents ample revelation on everything vital to our spirituality (accountability)
Spiritually Discerned: God gave His Word to the world to lead men to Christ, but much is written to His own
Typology: people, events, objects, rituals, etc. serve as symbols of Christ, salvation, heaven, etc.
Inerrancy: Not translators and scribes but the original autographs (like DNA) were breathed by the Holy Spirit
Numerology: numbers at times are symbolic: 3 for God, 6 for man, 12 for Israel, 40 for judgment, etc.
First-Mention: knowledge of good and evil leads to death; seed of the woman; justification by faith
Hebrew Parallelisms: poetry; couplets; alternation; inversions; story symmetry
